Although Arkansas joined the Confederate States of America in 1861, not all of its citizens supported secession. Arkansas formed some 48 infantry regiments to serve in the Confederate Army, but also formed another 11 regiments that served in the Union Army. Arkansas was the 25th state to enter the United States and it was the 9th state to seceed from the union.
Isaac Murphy was one of the five delegates who voted against the passage of the secession ordinance. A new vote was asked for after a discussion. Four delegates changed their vote, but Murphy alone refused to budge. He would not break his promise to the voters. Mrs. Frederick Trapnall of Little Rock showed her support by throwing him a bouquet from the gallery.
